Geographically, Washington County is located in the center of the State, home to the Capital City of Montpelier, the more industrial community of Barre, and many small towns and villages dispersed along the valleys of the Green Mountains.

You can visit the world's largest granite quarry, the Rock of Ages quarry and related attractions and museums located southeast of Barre. Sheer cliffs descend 475 feet to quarry floor below. The tourist center describes the process which transforms this gray stone into beautiful monuments and sculpture which endures for centuries.

Montpelier, the Capitol is the pride of Vermont. Its gold-leaf dome (real gold) shines brightly against the wooded hillside in downtown Montpelier. The interior is adorned with marble floors, spiral staircases and finely carved wood trim. Tours of this magnificent building are available during the summer months and fall foliage season.

While in the area be sure to visit Waterbury, which is the location of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, whose factory tours have become Vermont's most popular tourist attraction. Other local businesses include: Cabot Creamery Annex, Cold Hollow Cider Mill, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and Lake Champlain Chocolates.

Vermont comes closer than any New England state to realising the quintessential image of small-town Yankee America, with its white churches and red barns, covered bridges and clapboard houses, snowy woods and maple syrup. No city manages a population of more than forty thousand (only Burlington comes close) and the chief tourist attraction is Ben and Jerry's ice-cream factory in Waterbury. At 4,393 feet, Mount Mansfield in Lamoille County is Vermont's highest mountain and is a ski area with terrain suitable for intermediate to expert skiers but a week there in Stowe during the summer can be extremely relaxing too.
